MONTHLY 5 - October 2022

The frights are frequent in the fearful five for Halloween. I tried to focus on Stephen King adaptations but there are remarkably few of them out there. The Running Man is game based on a movie that's barely based on a book by his pseudonym (not to mention its not a horror story) and The Lawnmower Man is pants all round. I also didn't fancy a text adventure, even if it was based on The Mist. The only two that are left are a Capstone-published adventure game called The Dark Half (1992 Orion Pictures Corporation & IntraCorp Inc) and a desktop time-waster called Stephen King's F12 (1999 Blue Byte Software). Read on to see how well they fare.

To fill in the gaps, there's the obscure and underrated Amiga FPS called Fears (1995 Manyk Ltd & Attic Entertainment Software) which is more like Doom than the other Amiga Doom-clone called Gloom. I've also jumped for joy when an English translation patch arrived for Mizzurna Falls (1998 Human Entertainment) the Japanese-only Twin Peaks-inspired open-world action-adventure on Sony's PlayStation. Finally, I got to exploring the ancient Egyptian curses of The Mummy: Tomb of the Pharaoh (1996 Amazing Media & Interplay), a first-person adventure game from the people behing Frankenstein: Through the Eyes of thr Monster.

That's not all! I've also added a small patch for the Enemy Infestation package. Unzip the small configuration files in the game's install directory to prevent conflict with the game's keyboard shortcuts and the DOSBox hotkeys.

Head on after the jump to find out more... if you dare!

  2. Great pack again, especially Mizzurna Falls!

Got 3 for you to consider:
Limbo of the Lost (it has to be here only for its "legend")

Ring: The Legend of the Nibelungen

Ring II: Twilight of the Gods

And btw, wouldn't be saving you time not to bother with games that are in Zomb's Lair (like Mummy in this package)? I get the impression that you are in good terms (having his link on "Sites I Like" is a proof of that :P) and your to-do list is long enough i guess anyway!

    Again, superb job!

    1. Good suggestions! They're all on my radar (I actually own the two Ring games, and Ring Cycle come to think of it). I remember the hubub surrounding Limbo of the Lost when it came out. I always thought their means to get art assets was a good idea if they were developing a free fanmade AGS game. Another thing entirely for a full retail game.

I have held off from the games in Zomb's Lair for the most part. Mystery of the Mummy has been requested frequently enough, even with Zomb already having it. Sometimes I want to play them too and if I'm going to, and it's been requested, I might as well put it up on the site. There's plenty of differences in our approaches to the reviews and the packages that I think it's worthwhile every now and then.

  3. Thank you very much for the games posted. Thanks to you I got to know several great games that I didn't know existed like Morpheus, Obsidian, Frankenstein: Through the Eyes of the Monster., Byzantine, Black Dahlia, Carnevil, Zero Critical, Quarantine, Cybermage, Cyclone, The Violinist of Hameln, WarCraft Adventures: Lord of the Clans. There are 4 games you could consider: The Lawnmower Man ( 1993 ), Cyberwar ( 1994 ), The Need for Speed: Special Edition (a.k.a. The Need For Speed SE) ( 1996 ), Need for Speed II: SE ( 1997 ). Thank you very much

    1. I was considering The Lawnmower Man for October but I couldn't bring myself to play it. I have played and despised the Super Nintendo version and while completely different, I hear the PC game isn't much better. I know I'll torture myself with it at some point though. The others are very much on my list. Don't know when I'll get to them though.

  4. Hey man I know beggars can't be chooser, and you do this for free.

But if possible can I request Montezuma's Return?

I can find copies on abandonware sites but they don't include the CD music and 3DFX version is bugged.

Thanks! I really enjoy your releases! Great work so far!

    2. Oh yeah I definitely downloaded this before. Both software and 3dfx version don't run. If you're don't mind please revisit it again if you have the time. Thanks

    3. Are you sure? I've just done a test and it confirms what other people in the comments have said - it works. Are you sure it downloaded/instaled correctly? See the FAQ for possible troubleshooting issues.
