DC ANIMATED COMIC BOOKS

DC's Justice League movie is almost here so what better time than to look at some CD-ROMs of superheroes' past. In 1996 Inverse Ink released a slew of interactive animated comic books. Four were released based on Aquaman, Batman, Superman and Superboy. Read on to learn more about them.

These titles take four tales not from the comic books, but from the ancient animated television series of the 1960s created by Filmation. The result is a TV show in panel form and sadly there's little beyond that.

There's nothing really interactive either. Each panel can be clicked on and you'll either hear the dialogue spoken, witness a highly compressed QuickTime video cut from the show or see a pointlessly short in-engine animation such as a cape flap or hand move. Occasionally a folder icon appears in the corner which will give you some additional information such as weapon schematics or a plan for world domination.

We live in a time where the novelty of full-motion video has long since worn off so is there any point to revisiting these CD-ROMs? In all honesty, no. The full unedited original episodes are easily found on YouTube or DailyMotion and they're not chopped up or spliced to fit the new comic format. Fans of the comics won't get much out of them either as all of the stories were written specifically for television and with a young audience in mind. Even in the 60s, I'd imagine that the printed storylines were much better than the TV shows.

The only way I can see these being of any value is as educational tools for the very young. With both text and speech present on each panel, children learning to read may find it an entertaining way to brush up on their skills.
