~from the back of the box

In 1998, Sierra and Dynamix took on the NASCAR licence for their fourth entry in the 3D Ultra Pinball series. That's quite a left turn for an IP that leaned heavily on classic genre conventions. When you actually playing it, though, you see a somewhat ingenious implementation of two seemingly incompatable play styles, even if the end product isn't as enticing as this makes it sound.

The idea is that you support your driver via the pinball. Ramps, bumpers and switches will increase the stats of your vehicle, increasing your chances of winning a race. The problem with this set up is that it offers the least amount of variety in any entry to the series.

The back of the box states that there are 12 tables in total, but in truth there are only three. You can choose between four different NASCAR racers; Dale Earnhardt, Terry Labonte, Bobby Labonte and Bill Elliott. Each has their own Garage, Speedway and Pitstop table but all that's really different is the backgrounds, the diver's oversized signature and the obvious product placements slathered over the bonnet of the car. The layouts are all the same so it's a bit disingenuous promoting them as different. It's not like there's a lot to do on each table either, making for far lees variety than any other game in the series.

On the plus side, the ball physics seems to have improved by a significant measure. While not entirely realistic, it's far easier to predict the movement of the ball. There's also a fairly comprehensive encyclopedia chronicalling facts and tidbits NASCAR fans would most likely already know. Even so, it's presented nicely and has some hyperbolic video clips stewn in for good measure.

It's just a shame that the undelying game isn't as interesting. Petrol heads would likely rather play the official NASCAR racing game while pinball fans can find better elsewhere, even in the same series. As such, NASCAR Pinball (aka Turbo Racing) crosses the finish line at last place in the 3D Ultra race.
