BLAM! MACHINE HEAD

Seen through the eyes of Dr Kimberly Stride, Blam! gives you the ride of your life through fifteen adrenaline-pumping stages of state-of-the-art 3D blast-'em-up action. The 360 degree undulating terrain and tunnel systems feature hordes of mutated 3D polygonal enemies that you'll have to blast away with a lethal combination of ace piloting and aggressive shooting.

A unique cyberspace feature enables the game map to be changed in real-time, allowing you to complete strategic objectives vital to the completion of your mission.

Eye-popping FMV and comic strip cut-scenes link sections of the game together in an insane B-movie melodrama storyline and you'll be begging for mercy as you face the Machine head in the mother of all showdowns.

Blam! Machinehead is a high-octain FPS from Core Design released in 1996. The world has become consumed with a nasty virus that has merged human DNA with insects, taking no time at all for our green planet to become a Mad Max free-for-all. As Dr. Kimberly Stride, you take on the mutant forces to cure the virus and rid it from existance. Naturally, this can only be done by shooting everything in sight.

You're not on foot in the fully 3D environments, but in a floaty hovercraft. This addition is perhaps the worst element of the game as controls are slippery and a little unresponsive. It doesn't help that the levels are designed for precision. You can easily fall off a ledge while battling a giant spider, only to travel a great distance to get back where you were. It's a little disorientating too, with a limited draw distance and field of view. The hud, which can be turned off, will take up the centre of the screen too, getting in the way more than anything else.

If you can get past the controls, the game itself is fun if a little generic. I expect in 1996 if was more impressive with perhaps only Quake (released 4 months earlier) surpassing its graphical prowess in polygons. Unlike that game though, they haven't held up well here. An OK to good shooter with a fun B-Movie plot.
