~ from the back of the box
An isometric RPG from 1991 that's set in Norse mythology. As one of Odin's champions, you can fight Norse gods to prevent Ragnarok (I'll spell it correctly here, unlike every English teacher's nightmare that is the blurb on the back), the Nordic name for the Apocalypse.
The graphics are nice looking if pretty standard for such a game at the time, but the music is often excruciating. This is definitely one to play in silence. You can control your character with the mouse or arrow keys, but I suggest you use a combination of both. The mouse is best used for clicking on specific hotspots like collectable items or NPCs for a little chat. There are dialogue trees here, with conversations continuing when you click on a subject like most adventure games. There's also an interactive fiction element too, where you can type in your own subject. It's not as robust as a game designed around that mechanic - if you curse, there's no acerbic comeback - but it does force you to concentrate on what you're told.
The fighting isn't turn-based but sort of real-time. The mechanics used is fairly common in early RPGs with a pen & paper influence. Instead of pressing a key or clicking directly on your enemy, you have to click on the attack icons in the menu at the bottom of the screen. If your Norse saviour is positioned correctly enough, he will sometimes hit the enemy but how hard is determined solely by a roll of the dice. Literally. The in-game commentary states what number you've 'rolled' and whether it's a hit or a miss. This randomness has a bizarrely disassociative effect, leaving you disconnected to your chosen hero who already lacks any kind of personally. The story surrounding him/her is pretty decent though, even if it is a little basic.
There's still a good old-school role playing game in there. It's not as deep as something like Ultima but the mythological setting is inviting.

Fabulous! Thank you!
ReplyDeleteI loved the story-telling of this developer... later called Dreamforge Intertainment.
Nice! I didn't go too deep into research as this was a mini-review so I didn't know that. They've made some brilliant games.
