Thanks to a little show called The X-Files, alien conspiracies were everywhere. There was one documentary series that truly captured the zeitgeist; Sightings. Airing on the Sci-Fi Channel (now SyFy), each episode took a serious look at dubious allegations which is as entertaining as ever.
Tim White, the host of the show, lends his narration skills to this CD-ROM. Published by Simon & Schuster Interactive in 1997, Sightings: The UFOpedia made good use of the space to provide a lot of video footage and data in which to explore, though don't go expecting much new. If you've seen every episode of the show - which a fair few of them can be found on YouTube - you've already seen everything this digital alternative has to offer. If you fancy a cut-down version of the show with a nicely presented menus and documents to peruse at your leisure, then this is the software for you.
From the main menu, you have access to four categories; Alien Life, UFOs, Government and a general Database, though you'll have quick access to each if you hover over the flying saucer at the top of each page. On every click, you'll find speculations of alien worlds, theories of unexplained phenomena and a paranoid look at secretive government agencies. As someone who was once well-versed in the myths that inspired The X-Files, I found the most fascinating area to be the Local Database. Here you'll find brief descriptions of encounters of any kind from any part of the world. Sadly, none were found in my area but the next county over seemed to be an alien hotspot in the 1970s!
There's a lot of information packed into the spinning circular disc, and it's nicely presented for the most part. It won't go into particular detail, leaving the more hardened conspiracy nuts wanting, but it doesn't overstay its welcome for those who consider a tin hat an unflattering fashion choice. Given my affinity for the subject matter, I'd consider it one of the more enjoyable interactive encyclopedias out there.

Stereotyped.
ReplyDeleteIs there any chance of getting an ISO/Bin file for this? Can’t run the emulator but can run old discs on my Windows XP and can’t find this anywhere!
ReplyDeleteI don't offer straight ISOs, but when installed you can find it in the CD folder of the install directory. If that's not helpful, I sourced my ISO from here:

I love this program. My older brother got it as a Christmas present, and I fooled around with it as a small kid. It gave me nightmares with spooky music and artwork lol! Such a nostalgia trip to tool around with. I miss software encyclopedias so much.
