Disney's Tigger Activity Center arrived on PC in 2001, right in the thick of Disney Interactive's activity centre era, when it appeared like every major movie or character was contractually obligated to host a collection of mini-games for preschoolers. As expected, Tigger is the star. We've already had a couple starring Pooh-Bear himself, so it makes sense. Like the others set within the Hundred Acre Wood, it's arguably one of the stronger entries in the extensive lineup, even if older players will quickly get bored of it.
The main hub is a cheerful illustrated map of the infamous woods, with five clickable locations that Tigger can visit. Tigger stands ever-present in the bottom left occasionally chiming in voice lines from the unmistakeable Jim Cummings. His Tigger performance carries the whole experience, firing off encouragement and jokes at a rate that somehow avoids becoming grating. One of the highlights here is Tiggerific Tunes, a surprisingly flexible music toy where kids place instruments on a bouncing grid and let Tigger ricochet around triggering notes. Each character on the top is in charge of a section of the orchestra, from woodwinds to percussion, and if the instrument has tone you can freely tune it. The only thing you can't change is beat, which sees Tigger stumble across the grid at a slow pace. It's simple enough for children to experiment freely, but structured enough that what comes out might actually resemble music. Not good music, but music nonetheless.
Tiggerific Tunes. Choose the note when placing an instruments, then listen to a cacophony (left).
Turtle Hurdles. The kid-friendly game of Mastermind is the best mini-game in the package (right).
Two of the more straightforward activities are Spot the Dot and Tigger's Bushels of Fun, both clearly aimed at the youngest of players. Spot the Dot is essentially connect-the-dots. Click on the small black circles in numerical order to gradually reveal a picture. When completed you get the option to print them out as either black-and-white outlines for colouring pages or a fully coloured poster. It's a calming distracting, but not exactly worthwhile for forty-somethings. Bushels of Fun is just as easy, though it is more of an actual game. It asks you to sort vegetables into Rabbit's baskets before the carrot-shaped timer runs out. It speeds up as you succeed, but cleverly slows itself back down if you fail a few times, a small but thoughtful touch that gently teaches the pre-schoolers how to use the mouse.
The real standout, especially for us grown-ups, is Turtle Hurdles. This is essentially a kid-friendly version of Mastermind, where you must work out the correct sequence of coloured turtles to build a bridge across a stream. After each attempt, the turtles give visual feedback indicating correct colour and position, correct colour but wrong position, or a completely wrong choice. Multiple difficulty levels gradually introduce repeated colours and longer sequences, and there's genuine logical deduction required to solve the harder puzzles. It's the one activity here that can actually make an adult take pause and think.
Tigger's Bushels of Fun. Match the veg to the basket in the time limit. Too simple to truly be fun (left).
Tigger's Travels. Play a simple board game with a friend, but watch out for hazards spots (right).
Front and centre on the map is Tigger's Travels, a board-game-style race between Tigger and Pooh that feels like the designers' pride and joy considering its placement on the map. Players spin the number wheel and move their character along a path. Sometimes, they will encounter friends but this is not as positive as it might seem. Instead of getting a boon, you're friend's distraction will cause you to skip a turn. Alternatively, shortcuts and detours also exist on the way back to Pooh's house. It supports two players, making it ideal for siblings or parent-and-child play, and it strikes a nice balance between randomness and simple decision-making. I also noticed that there will never be too big a gap between the players, so there'll be less whinging if someone constantly spins a 1. An entertaining, if simple mini-game.
Like most of the activity centres, Disney's Tigger Activity Center is a polished package with strong animation, excellent voice work, and a nice mix of creative play and light problem-solving. It's not going to hold the attention of older kids for long, and adults will exhaust most of its surprises in a single sitting. Still, as far as these activity centres go, this is one of the better ones. For the right age group, it's a genuinely “tiggerific” way to spend an afternoon in front of the PC.
