Not long ago, we said farewell to the music legend that was Charlie Watts. And so, in tribute, I thought I'd take a look at a CD-ROM experience based around the drummer's band; Rolling Stones: Voodoo Lounge CD-ROM.

The multi-media title cam out the year after their 1994 album of the same name and features a few of their singles including Love is Stong, I Go Wild and Sparks Will Fly. These aren't exaclty the band's most well-remembered songs, likewise the album, but they do encapsulate the hedonistist image of Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and the gang. And it is exactly that image this piece of edutainment aims to capture.

You start at the entrance to the Voodoo Lounge, where a lust for life, love and liquor overcome everyone who enters. Digitized revellers dance and gyrate in every scene, where every band member also hangs out. Get to the bar and you'll receive a pass to the VIP area, but you can also click on a cocktail to listen to the singles the game is trying to promote, playing pschedelic videographer as you do so.

Beyond this, you can remix songs, discover band influences and witness some impromtu jams, but the real meat of the package is in the many video and audio clips. Members reminisce on the band's beginnings while also musing on why they have stayed together for so long. You get behind the scenes footage of live gigs and the making of Voodoo Lounge shot by Mick Jagger and Ron Wood and each member gets a mural that praises their contibution to music history.

Other than gaining that VIP pass, there isn't really any 'game' to be had, which is a shame considering the hyper-stylised Voodoo Lounge itself makes for an interesting location. It is simply an excuse for musical skits and diverting animations that don't hold the same novelty as it did in 1995. Nevertheless, it is a must play for Rolling Stones fans and music fans in general, if only for how open the rockstars are.

It's a testament to the Stones' longevity that they were still touring in their late 70's right up until the pandemic hit. The great pause forced them to postpone dates from their No Filter tour, but the loss of Charlie Watts will be felt whenever they take the stage again. Farewell.
