When the straight-to-video Disney sequels were ramping up in the early 2000s, so were the shenanigans of their home computer edutainment titles. It was around this time that the Hotshots label of games came about; dirt cheap titles cashing in on a brand name - at least to begin with. As the start if this label, each release was a single game from a previously released Activity Centre. Games based on The Lion King 2: Simba's Pride, Tarzan and The Hunchback of Notre Dame were gutted, releasing each mini-game separately. This cheapened the series as a whole and confused many when the label was slapped on to full, newly released titles and complete re-issues in Europe.
This is where The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea - Activity Centre comes in. This was a title I didn't know existed until relatively recently - and those who've followed my Disney out put since this site's inception know I've been actively looking. The game itself is bare bones with only two mini-games. Young girls may like the three creative activities - particularly the sing-a-long section, but it doesn't leave much for anyone else.
Beginning with the games, we have a maze-like Pac-Man game where you have to find King Neptune's trident before the sea witch Morgana. The other has you dive under the collecting gemstones to make jewellry with. This one even has a little animated intro which is nice. Both aren't exactly bottom-of-the-barrel for these kinds of games - and there have been some with more games but less actual gameplay - but only having two is a let down.
Other than the sing-a-long and the same kind of art tool every one of these games have, the last activity has you choreograph a fish dance. Set up multiple shapes for your fish to follow, then add symbols at each point to tell them to perform a dance move. You can put multiple fish on-screen, including Ariel herself, but without a goal I found it to be rather dull.
Like the movie it's based on, The Little Mermaid 2: Return to the Sea - Activity Centre isn't exactly the best thing out there. The presentation is underwhelming and with a definite lack of content, I doubt many young players would stay interested in it for long. Also, anything that convinces little mermaid wannabes to record their singing voice into a microphone should concern the ears of any parent out there.
