5 GAMES FOR DECEMBER - STAR WARS!

So, I finally got round to seeing Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker last night and thoroughly enjoyed it. Despite the naysayers, it remains a cinematic tour de force so what better way to celebrate than a trove of classic Star Wars games. The short-lived sub-division of Lucas Learning gave us some obscure titles. Learn about physics and momentum in the Star Wars: Anakin's Speedway (1999). Then learn the same thing but with robots in the far superior action-puzzler Star Wars: DroidWorks (1998). Test your biology skills in the Sim-Life a-like strategy game Star Wars: Episode I - The Gungan Frontier (1999). Want a little less learning? Why not try the official tie-in to Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace (1999)? Lastly, travel back to a time before the special editions and get your very first look at them in Star Wars: Making Magic (1996)!

Enjoy! And I'll see you in the new year!

  1. Wooooow Happy New Year 2020. Thx a loot. :D

  2. Happy New Year! I look forward to visiting this site more in the New Year.

I haven't seen Star Wars IX yet, as Little Women took precedence. (I loved Gerwig's intelligent deconstruction of the novel and the author.) I hope to see SW in early January. I was dreading seeing it based on the mixed reviews, but your recommendation makes me feel sanguine about it. I know that "sticking the landing" is always difficult in a long-running franchise, because they can't satisfy all the viewers who have formed their own ideas about how it should end. I will just go with the flow, without any preconceptions.

    1. Not sure if Little Women is out over here yet (if it is, then only just). Looking forward to seeing it but I'm a star wars fanboy at heart.

If u hated last jedi, I doubt you'd like this one. I thought it tied up loose end well. I'll go in a little more depth on my movies of the year post.

    2. I didn't hate The Last Jedi. There was no good reason for anyone to hate it, I thought, except for the most unpleasant fanboys.

Little Women opened in the UK on Boxing Day. I vaguely remember you saying you weren't that impressed by Lady Bird, just as I wasn't either the first time I watched it -- but this takes things to another level. It's as subtle as the previous film, if not more so, but with a noticeably bigger budget.

    3. I've seen Star Wars now. It does tie up all the loose ends, and Biffman is right in telling people to ignore the naysayers and just go and watch it.

The best moment for me: when Oscar Isaac's character (Poe Dameron) was exposed as a "spice" runner, and Finn repeated the line: "You're a spice runner. Runner of spice." That thrilled me, and should thrill anyone else who knows that Oscar Isaac will next be seen as Duke Leto Atreides, governor of the spice planer Arrakis, in Dune later this year. If Warner Bros are smart, they would promote Dune as a kind of continuation of Star Wars.

  4. Happy New Year, Biffman!

And thanks for the Star Wars software!

Would you think it would be possible to make available "Behind the Magic" too?
Never was able to even install it.

    2. so yes, lets see Behind the magic, on Windows 10, and see how its faired with age. Making magic doesn't even show the full special edition sequences, just picture slides, behind the magic, shows them, from what i remember of it, i think !

  5. It ain't for (Star Wars) games I'm reaching out to you, Biff, and the community today, but to wish any of you guys a heartwarming and refreshing New Year with the double twenty in it, obviously! Hopefully, the popularity of The Collection Chamber will grow even stronger among those inclined private gamers who still aren't aware about this pleasant place, but do passionately care about their retro fix. Which is something that couldn't be treated anywhere better AND more personally than right here at TCS, (one of) Biff's great lifetime achievement(s). May the force continue to be with him and us throughout a bright 2020! :-)

    Bye for now from Germany,
    Thomas

    1. Frohes neues Jahr.

After all I've read of you here at TCS, you seem to be a guy who's got what it takes to pick up my mothertongue comparatively comfortable. :-)

      Bis dann,
      Thomas

    3. By the way, T.P is my Internet nickname which I'm using here and there as well. Sometimes it can happen that I'm interchanging it with my real name by coincidence. As I indeed just have done. ;-)

      Bye for now,
      Thomas

    5. Sounds fantastic, James! In fact, there's no reason at all for any sort of "Schadenfreude"! :-)

Maybe just one hint, if you allow: German pronouns used for salutation like "Ihrer" and "Sie" that you've written down, sound too formal in our "buddy" case. So, replacing "Ihrer" with "Deiner", and "Sie" with "Du" ("...bist du/Du sicher zu gut...") is surely an adequate act of informality.

P.S. If you wanna go the elegant German way like me, then every first character of each German pronoun used for informal salutation can be capitalized (with formal salutation, it's a must). For example: Du (instead of "du"), Dein (instead of "dein"), Dich (instead of "dich"). Used within German letters or messages which are supposed be read like letters.

      Bye for now,
      Thomas

    6. Now that we're talking about replacements: Why did I actually write "TCS" - as an acronym for The Collection Chamber - in two of my messages listed above?

The answer: I don't have the slightest idea. But this much is true: it's "TCC", of course. :-)

      Bye for now,
      Thomas

  6. Thank you ever so much for these. Your Virtual Springfield was really appreciated!
Is there any chance for Interstate '76 or is that legally iffy? It's the one game I most commonly see people installing PCem for because it won't run correctly on modern PCs. Cheers!

  7. Fantastic job with this collection - another excellent set of sci-fi games. Another Star Wars game not currently sold and impossibly difficult to get to run on PC is Star Wars Force Commander (got all the others running but this still defeats me - black screen on gameplay) - would be amazing if this was added to your list too?

  8. Are you looking at getting some of the other Star Wars Lucas Learning titles on here like Jar Jars Journey, Yodas Challenge, Pit Droids etc...

    ReplyDelete

    1. Yes, and maybe. I have Jar Jar's Journey and Yoda's Challenge tentatively working through emulation, but Pit Droids seems to have issues so that's hit or miss.
