MONTHLY 5 - May 2023

A lot has happened in blighty this past month. Not only have we regained our rightful place as almost last in Eurovision, but we've only gone and crowned ourselves a new King! To commemorate this fact, I've been playing a game where one such monarch pillages his kingdom and sends his subjects to their deaths by fighting each other. That game is King's Bounty, and I've collated most of its ports and revisions in a compilation I call the King's Bounty Classic Collection (1990-1994 New World Computing).

That being said, my personal pick of the month is a blatant yet highly enjoyable Myst clone called Alida: The Enigmatic Giant (2004 Dejavu Worlds). Also available is one of the earliest stabs at a 3D platformer in the unfairly forgotten Bug! for PC (1996 SEGA). For the more adventurous among you, the hack-n-slash RPG NightStone (2001 New Horizons Studios) is worth a play and to cap out the month, we enter an educational fantasy land with beautiful art in Woodspell: The Enchanted Forest of Learning and Fun (1996 Mediola SRL).

As for the updates, we have three. Disney's Hercules: Hades Challenge and Chewy: ESC from F5 have been given the ScummVM treatment while Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace has had some tweaks for those with AMD cards. Head on over to their game pages for full details.

For this month's games, head on over past the jump. Enjoy!

  1. Another corking collection Sir Biffman. Alida being an old favourite of mine as well. Looking forward to immersing myself in that as well as Nightstone and of course your fascinating looking Kings Bounty collection. Many thanks again, as always, for your dedication.

    1. Request: Could you do some Sierra games like Lords of the Realm II or Caesar II or even some of their home or gardening software? Or Trophy Bass?

    2. Both of those Sierra are available to buy on GOG (and perhaps Steam) so are not eligible for this site. Trophy Bass is though. I do have old consumer CAD software that my Dad used. I think it was themed to BBC's Gardener's World. Not thought about it until now so I'll have to dig it out.

  2. Fantastic work! Please Consider adding the 1998 PC game Dark Vengeance to the Chamber. It's a perfect fit.

  3. I'll definitely try out that myst-ical Alida, which, just by having a look at the accompanying pictures, looks more close to a direct Myst sequel than the actual Riven sequel itself. Well, almost. :-) Damn, you thought you knew them all, but then you find out you know nothing, haha.

Thanks, Biff, and all the best!

    Bye for now

    1. Alida is great fun if you like Myst-likes. You may also want to give Woodspell a go too, even if it's an edutainment title. Going by the comments you've left in the past I think you might like it.

    2. Well, time has come a long way since I had left a comment here, but your lush retro gaming oasis is still in the same excellent shape; which is something that speaks for you without a doubt (not that I ever thought otherwise). :-)

      Bye for now

  4. I've never heard of Alida: The Enigmatic Giant, Nightstone or Woodspell: The Enchanted Forest of
Learning an Fun before. That's what I love about this site; being introduced to esoteric games. I've also been meaning to give the King's Bounty series a go for quite some time, so this is a cracking line up, as per usual.

  5. Dear Biffman You made another great set :D

Jon van Caneghem + team New World Computing, mother and father of Might and Magic. Kings Bounty brillant Collection. Alida hidden gem. Bug! and Woodspell looking nice and realy enjoyable. Nigtstone is good hack-n-slash RPG.I remember played it. Good to back to this title.

    Thank YOU very much.

PS> In time where companies and corporations changes on news systems, closing serwers, cut off games from libraries ora made them unable to play. And never looking for players who love old games. (I dont say about GOG - even they have a small part releases with bad compatibility or cut off versions)

This place Collection Chamber is every month a wonderful Time Machine.
Without You Biffman I can't imagine how I can find a much more of titles and IMPORTANT - how to run it !!!!
You fill a void in the history of computer games wonderfully.

    1000x THX
