HIDDEN GEMS - TOP 10 UNEXPECTED MOVIE LICENCED GAMES OF THE 90s

No one can deny that this past year has been... unexpected. Particularly in the movie industry. It's now awards season and even that's seen some unexpected goings on. Who would've thought a Borat sequel could've garnered two Oscar noms, let alone a couple of Golden Globes already in the bag?

Anyway, with this in mind I'd thought I'd tally up my Top 10 Unexpected Movie Licenced Games. There are a few criteria that would make a movie-based game unexpected. It could've been released way behind the initial cinema run, voiding any potential cross promotion. It could've used the licence in a weird way. Or may the licence itself doesn't usually scream 'game'.

There are 4 games new to the Collection Chamber; Aliens Online (1998 Fox Interactive), Hamlet: A Murder Mystery (1997 Castle Rock Entertainment & EMME Interactive), Indiana Jones and his Desktop Adventures (1996 LucasArts) and Plan 9 From Outer Space (1992 Gremlin Graphics). One of the 10 has also been updated, but I won't spoil that or their ranking here. You have to watch the video below or click on the jump to find out. Preferably both.

  1. I hope you're not offended in any way by me asking this, because I really appreciate your work very much. But since a long time I am trying to get one particular game to run, without success. Would it be possible to offer you a donation and you have a look at it specifically? The game is "Riverworld".

    1. I'm aware of it, but not really looked too far into it. Looks interesting ina Cryo sort of way.

    2. I'm such a great fan of the novel series, and I can NEARLY get it to work, but the graphics are messed up (stretched). If you could look into it, I will most certainly give this great site a donation of about 20€ :)

    3. I've not touched it yet, but if it's just the aspect ratio try this. If it's more than that, I'd have to take a closer look. Create a .txt file in the install folder and write in the following:

      set __COMPAT_LAYER=640x480
      (*whateve the launch .exe is*)

Then rename the .txt to a .bat file (eg run.bat) and run the game from there.

  2. Unfortunately, it is not just that. It seems to be a problem with the polygons being stretched. You can see the problem in the first picture in this link, mine looks exactly the same:

    1. It would be, were it not sold on GOG. I didn't want to include anything that's currently availably to buy.

  4. Not sure, if SNES fits in here, but THIS is the most unexpected movie game I ever came across:
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warlock_(video_game)
An obscure video game based on an obscure (but very entertaining) low-budget R-rated horror movie with lots of gore. And published on the "family friendly" SNES....

    1. That's a good choice! I remember reading about it in NMS as a kid. One of the few dark and serious game I remember for the system. Maybe I should do another video and include stuff like Fantastic Voyage on the Amiga, Surf Ninjas on the Game Gear or Super Back to the Future Part II on the Super Famicom
